COMMISSION A PAINTING

1. Let’s Have a Conversation

The process of commissioning a painting starts with a conversation. Classic poses as well as figurative, pets, interiors and landscapes are all welcome. Contact me and tell me what you have in mind. We can discuss your ideas, timeline and budget. We will decide whether we will have live sittings or if I will be using your photographs as references. In the case of the latter, I will need to see your images to evaluate the potential for a painting. It will be helpful if you know where it will hang, which will aid in determining the best size. The knowledge from our communication will facilitate arriving at a price. The fee for a commission is determined by time, size and complexity. The variety of elements may include head/shoulders, three-quarter including hands, full length, backgrounds, special features, additional subjects, complex compositions, live sittings or photo reference materials. Once we've agreed on the scope of the project, a 50% deposit is required, with the balance due upon completion. Framing and shipping are additional fees. Payment by Venmo, Zelle, cash, check or credit card.

2. Creating a Study

If we have chosen a live sitting, we will schedule a photography session, where I capture a variety of reference images. Together, we review the photographs during the session to ensure we have images that best reflect the character of the desired painting. If no live meeting is involved and we are using your existing photographs, we will select which images are best. Either way, back in my studio, I carefully refine the reference photographs, often combining the strongest elements from several images to design the ideal composition. I then create a study of the proposed painting and email it for your review.

3. Studio Work

Once you approve the image, I will begin the full-size painting on canvas in my studio.

4. Finishing Touches

As I approach the point of finishing touches, I will send you a picture of it for your review. Minor adjustments can be made to your satisfaction. The balance is due at this time. The painting will be delivered.
